Declan O'Rourke
In Conversation With Peter Murphy
Saturday July 2nd 2pm
Tickets €10 (€7 Senior/Student)

Join Declan O'Rourke In Conversation with Peter Murphy (Cursed Murphy) about his book The Pawnbroker's Reward with Q&A after as part of the 2022 Wexford Literary Festival.

This event will also feature a special guest performance by Ben MacCaoilte & Daire Murray.

Declan O’Rourke’s award-winning album, Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine, was released to critical acclaim in 2017. It illuminated an extraordinary series of eye-witness accounts, including the story of Pádraig and Cáit ua Buachalla. Four years on, in Declan’s meticulously researched literary debut, the story of the ua Buachalla family is woven into a powerful, multilayered work showing us the famine as it happened through the lens of a single town – Macroom, Co. Cork – and its environs.

Local pawnbroker Cornelius Creed is at the juncture between the classes. Sensitive and empathetic, he is a voice on behalf of the poor, and his story is entwined with that of Pádraig ua Buachalla. Through these characters – utilising local history and documentary evidence - Declan creates a kaleidoscopic view of this defining moment in Ireland’s history.

Declan O’Rourke’s artistry has been described as ‘proffering reassurance in the face of inevitable sorrow’ by Jon Pareles, chief music critic of theNew York Times. ‘Galileo’ was described by Paul Weller as the song he most wished he’d written from the past 30 years. Other notable fans of O’Rourke are the Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, Imelda May, Pete Townshend and Eddi Reader, who described Declan as ‘one of the finest songwriters on the planet’.

Oops, This Is Toxic
Live Comedy With Julie Jay
Saturday 10th September at 8:30pm

Tickets €18 (€16 Senior/Student)

As a fellow early eighties Sagittarius, comedian Julie Jay’s life has had a lot of parallels with Britney Spears: Britney was a member of the Mickey Mouse Club, Julie was a member of the Poetry Club; Britney can sing like an angel, Julie was the only hearing child in her class of 30 who didn’t make the Confirmation Choir.

This dark comedy love letter is a nostalgia fest for anyone who has ever dropped to that Hit Me Baby beat, for anyone who came of age against the backdrop of nineties/noughties misogyny, for anyone who has wanted to be defined by their moments of joy rather than their moments of pain.

From the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal to the terrifying lows of noughties reality TV, Oops, This is Toxic is a celebration not just of Britney, but of everyone who survived an era wherein Justin Timberlakes flew high while Janet Jacksons got grounded.

"The brightest, funniest thing I've seen for a long, long time"
- Tommy Tiernan

"Hilarious"
- Irish Examiner

"One of Ireland's leading comedians"

With Jamie Sinnott & Edward McGuiness

Starting September 5th
Runs For 5 Weeks

Starting anything is the hardest part. No more is this true then with art creation itself. This introductory art course is designed from the ground up to tackle this problem head on. This five-week course will give you the tools for better learning, keeping yourself motivated and largely making creating art an overall enjoyable experience. So, whether, its Manga, Comics, illustration, or painting, it doesn’t matter. These universal learning tools, will have you improving your skills in no time.

So, whether you’re just starting your art journey. Or maybe you’ve lost your spark along the way and now need a good kick up the back side. This course is for you.

Workshop motto and details:
Your Teachers are artists who have given up on their passion many of times in the past. Due to lack of Motivation. Therefore, we have flipped what some would consider the normal art class on its head. Instead of focusing on technique (A Motivation killer!) We focus on ways of making the learning process fun, and strive to create a healthy mind-set. You essentially will learn, how to learn. Or rather, the best ways to learn and improve, while maintaining that pesky motivation.

Don’t worry, we are still going to go over the fundamentals and how to get the greatest improvements from your time. But more importantly how to think about art the right way to get the greatest gains.
