Them - Zane Sutra
Them is an exhibition of work by Latvian Native Zane Sutra who now lives and works in County Wexford.
This year, she earned her (BA) degree in Visual Arts from Carlow Institute of Technology, Wexford School of Art and Design.
Her work is presented in large-scale figurative oil paintings along with smaller works, painted in 2016.
The imagery in her most recent work (dome ceilings, water, smoke, war planes) are codes, belonging to Zane’s personal history. “They are archetypes. They are factually absurd fragmented memories turned into autonomous story lines.” She questions and synthesizes ideas both physical and spiritual, the human and the divine, her work collages issues both current and timeless.
As a source material Zane uses old photographs from the 1920’s called French Postcards.
“It is about women, death, religion and sex. Those women were real but remained anonymous. Painted characters are pointing to the misleading illusory imaginations that control our obsessions and phobias through historical disasters. They are symbols stereotyping dangerous pleasures (like war crime and sex crime) and confronting horror, femininity and mortality.”
Zane always enjoys the juxtaposition, the ambiguity of the photographed and the painted image; between the truth and the fiction.
